Event: Essential Digital Health for the Underserved: Establishing an Equitable Learning Health System for Virtual Care
Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2024
Content: This presentation will introduce how a national technology enabled care conference turned its attention to using digital health to support equity deserving populations, and how to introduce the deliberative dialogue method to focus on equity-informed virtual care in BC. A dialogue was held last year with Indigenous and rural community members, policy makers, health administrators, health practitioners, and health services researchers. The central aim was to advance health equity for rural, remote, and Indigenous communities, with the dialogue centered on optimizing patient journeys and community experiences so as to develop a set of recommendations for all relevant stakeholders to collaborate on the delivery and improvement of virtual care. This deliberative dialogue approach is essential in the relationship and trust building needed yet often overlooked in the Learning health system (LHS) framework.

Presentation: Connecting Patients to Primary Care, presented by Onil Bhattacharyya, Kendall Ho, Shelley Morris
Event name: SPOR Canadian Primary Care Research Network Webinar (this event is not open to the public)
Date: June 25, 2024
Abstract: For people without a regular source of care, and people with urgent needs who can’t see their regular primary care clinicians, navigating access can be confusing. Many provinces and territories have implemented different strategies to connect people with needed primary care, redesigning the “architecture” of first-contact care. Multiple jurisdictions have implemented centralized waitlists for primary care clinicians, with variations in how patients are matched to care. In addition, multiple jurisdictions have introduced new or enhanced tools to support patient self-management and access to care, including expanded services through Health 811 and a range of connected services. This panel will bring together researchers and policymakers to discuss these innovations. The goal is to learn from research evidence alongside cross-jurisdictional policy experience to identify promising strategies to support patients in navigating primary care, and to connect patients to primary care services with the goal of supporting equitable access to primary care.

EDH4U Paper: Essential Digital Health for the Underserved (EDH4U) Research Papers
Presentation: Digital Health & Equity, presented by Clare Arden, Alex Haagaard, Kendall Ho, Jacob Jeremko
Event name: 2024 Canadian Arthritis Research Conference
Date: April 4, 2024
Abstract: This session will focus on essential digital health for the underserved, including how recent developments in handheld ultrasound and AI give the opportunity to screen babies for hip dysplasia, allowing effective treatment to prevent hip arthritis. Portable scanning by a simple protocol minimizing travel to tertiary care centres has potential to reach those at highest risk, especially First Nations people and those in remote/rural locations.
